'Good things come to those who wait' ( or do they?)

 4th August 2022

I was sat thinking about this proverb earlier today, and immediately come to the decision, I do not agree with it!😅 I have heard this for many years without really thinking about it ..

The proverb dates back to a specific poem by Violet Fane, and the second part of the saying is never used! (I will leave you to Google the entire verse!) Quite often, particularly in Bible verses, we misquote or omit part of a verse, sometimes to suit our narrative or because we get it completely out of context with the entire passage.

I do not believe that it is always 'good things' that will come to those who wait. Many times after waiting, we receive bad, disappointing news. Today, I visit Stepping Hill Hospital once again for a CT Scan, which is routine after twelve months of surgery.

Waiting for the rain to stop!

This week, I have spent time in these waiting rooms ( for different reasons), and as I look around me at the patients, I realise that some will be waiting for good news, others - bad news. Waiting for results from a test or exam is the hardest! Many teens will  be waiting for exam results right now, wondering if they worked hard enough ...

Many 'waits' are exciting ; having a baby, a special birthday party or celebration, waiting at the airport - at least I know I will eventually  have something good to show for my waiting time!

However, hospitals are synonymous with waiting.

I remember whilst recovering from my bowel op, the clock in the ward was slower than ever and the more I thought about the time, the slower it went!

What can we do in our waiting time?

I think the answer here must be, Nothing!

Worry does not help the situation, although our normal 'human' nature tends to be anxious and worry about the 'what ifs" followed by the "should have, could have, would have" ( these phrases are NOT worth uttering!), there really isn't anything we can physically DO to change our situation!

My favourite preacher of all time says,

"Worry is like a rocking chair, you put so much effort in, but it gets you nowhere!"

Joyce Meyer

How true ? These patients sat with worried faces today unfortunately can't change their outcome of their tests, whether good or bad.

As I face another Colonoscopy and CT scan results, I am content with where I am right NOW

I choose to live my life from day-to-day and face the outcome of my tests and exams when they arrive👍
